Scotland Under-18s 13

ALEX TAIT took another step in his
other's footsteps with two out of seven tries as England kicked off their Home Unions Festival campaign by sweeping aside Scotland at Ebbw Vale today.

The Barnard Castle and Durham full-back, younger
other of Matthew who was capped at senior level against Wales last month, scored his
ace in the second half of a game England always controlled.

He was joined on the scoresheet by captain George Hughes, of Cheltenham College, Bath and Gloucestershire, who led by example with a couple of his own to give his side a 17-6 half-time lead.

Then the floodgates opened with Joe Simpson and Mark Odejobi going over before Tait's double sandwiched another try from goal-kicking fly-half Marcus Jackson.

Manager Ted Atkinson was pleased with the victory as a warm-up to their toughest test against defending champions Wales at Dunvant on Tuesday (4pm).

'It was just what we wanted to put us on a high before playing Wales,' said Atkinson. 'We were thoroughly professional against a big Scotland side. We had them struggling up front but especially when we got the ball wide, where we had too much power for them.'

Jackson kicked England into an early lead before Hughes split the defence to race in from the 22 and then repeated the score on half-time.

Simpson opened the second half by driving over after taking a tap penalty, then Odejobi took two Scotland defenders with him over the try-line before Tait joined the line and raced in from 30 metres.

Jackson jinked his way over for the sixth try before Tait completed the victory by tearing through the Scotland midfield.
