1st XV TSS 65 – TGS 3

With George Nield injured Harry Vousty made his run on debut. TGS had the kick-off and a very strong behind them. After about 10 minutes TSS finally got out of their half and then after a good break from Syris Schmidt the pass went to Ngiyaani Waters to score under the posts. Hamish Roberts converted this and converted 4 from nine attempts with the wind playing havoc with any wider attempts.

The next kick-off saw JoJo Fifita receive the ball and he ran some 65 metres to score. TGS then replied with a penalty conversion. Line breaks by Dion Samuela and Kaleb Ngamanu finally lead to Zane Nonggorr barging over for a try. An excellent run and catch from the kick-off by Michael van der Schyff gained 20 metres and quick phase play got the ball to Dion for him to step and beat defenders with dummies and then score.

Patient play lead to George Blake making a 30 metre break and then a well-executed pass to JoJo gave him a clear 25 metres to run and add another try. From the kick-off, again TSS went on the attack with Kaleb making the break, then passed to Joe Devlin who ran another 20 and he gave an inside pass to Hudson Myer to race to the posts for another 7 point total. This was on half time and the score was 34-3.

Shortly into the second half a penalty to TSS, then a successful lineout saw a short backline move put Hamish under the posts. Following a good ground gaining kick from Ngiyaani Waters, JoJo made a half break and he passed the ball to Dion who scored near the corner. Again a number of reserve players started to be added to the game. Another full backline movement of the ball saw Hamish score his second in the corner.

A number of players were involved with small breaks and short passes and this concluded with Ngiyaani scoring. Pressure from pick and drives resulted in Carson Patu scoring and the final score was 65-3. TGS did make a couple of late breaks, however determined defence held them out and it became a fairly rare game when a team have not scored a try against a TSS First XV team. Well done to the forwards as they were dominate in set play, lineouts and mauls thus setting the platform for fairly patient attack.

Coach’s points went to Dion Samuela 1, JoJo Fifita 2 and George Blake 3. Honourable mentions went to Marlon Jones, Ngiyaani Waters, Syris Schmidt, and the leaders, Zane Nonggorr and Wilson Blyth.
