1st XV TSS 52 – BSHS 7

State kicked off then good continuity saw Dion Samuela score near the corner within two minutes. Hamish Roberts converted this and had another excellent day with a number of successful kicks wide out and finished with 6 from 8 attempts. Soon after Ngyaani Waters gives Hamish a well-timed unconventional pass to Hamish for him to race 30 metres to score. The next try came from a nice kick from Ngyaani down the blind side for Joe Devlin to chase and score near the corner on his run on debut.

From a great ground gaining kick from Dion, one of many for the day, TSS won the lineout, mauled to the line and George Blake scored. A typical Zane Nonggorr barge gained good metres in the 22 allowing Luc Lyndon to pick the ball up and beat several defenders to score next to the posts. Therefore after 25 minutes the team was up 33-0. The only other highlight before half time was a great tackle by Marlon Jones on State High’s biggest player who then lost the ball in their attacking 22.

Within a few minutes of starting the second half George Nield injured his ankle and was replaced by Harry Vousty and at various stages another 6 reserves were used. There was a 15 minute break due to a potential neck injury to a State High player. A fumble by a State High player in their 22 was punished when JoJo Fifita pounced on it and held off a couple of defenders to score. Later, State High made a big break down the field and after some phase play scored and converted it.

After a fair bit of general play Hamish made a half break, then under pressure grubber kicked towards the posts for JoJo to show his speed and beat the defenders to the ball and he scored under the posts. With minutes to go Wilson Blyth stole another State High lineout, to add to his consistent safe catches in many of the kick-offs. Then another dominant scrum win plus pick and drives finally saw the ball sent through the backline and Alex Walker scored in the corner. The game finished just after this and the final score was 52-7.

A great looking score, however teamwork was not consistent and there were far too many errors overall which must improve with much tougher games coming up.

Coach’s points were Michael van der Schyff 1, Hamish Roberts 2, and JoJo Fifita 3.
