1st XV TSS 67 – TGS 12

Tom van der Schyff returned from injury to lead the team and Lachie McInnes made his run on debut as Spencer Jeans was injured. The team literally made a flying start with Zach Palmer displaying his AFL background to catch our kick-off with a spectacular leaping catch. In the next phase of play Ronan Kapi had to leave the field for a blood bin period of time to close and tape up a open cut on his eyebrow.

Fairly soon afterwards Luc Lyndon scored near the posts and Campbell Parata converted. As eventually the score blew out, Campbell converted five from eleven attempts and the ones he missed were nearly all within five metres of the sideline. Reasonably quickly after Luc’s try, Dion Samuela made a break and passed to Zach who fended of some defenders to score, so a positive start. TGS then put pressure on the line, then pick and drives resulted in them scoring.

A well-executed backline move gave Hamish Roberts a break and two passes later Zach scored in the corner. A yellow card against Tyrell Kopua for the last eight minutes was handled quite well, however a TGS attacking player managed to off load in a tackle for his support player to run ten metres and score. Therefore the half time score was 17-12.

Unfortunately for TGS the second half saw them dominated by excellent play resulting in too many costly mistakes. Through the second half a number of changes were made giving the reserves a chance to blend in after their squad training.

Dion made an effective tackle on the TGS winger just short of the corner and not long after a short pass from Campbell and Luc was through the gap to brush off defenders to run thirty metres and score. Dion made a twenty metre break to score. Attacking in the twenty two a planned kick from Campbell across field to Zach was executed perfectly and Zach was also able to run closer to the posts to score. Campbell then gave an inside pass to Hugh Robinson for an 18th birthday try.

Ronan Kapi pounced on a loose TGS pass and ran twenty five metres to score. After strong work again from the forwards, Jesse Grey stepped two defenders near the line to score. Dion chimed into the backline to score again and finally after a strong run from Luc and continuity from the forwards, Campbell stepped near the line to score one himself on full-time and the score was 67-12.

Coaches’ points; Honourable mentions to Tom van der Schyff, Hugh Robinson and Zach Palmer. Dion Samuela 1, Campbell Parata 2 and Luc Lyndon 3.
