Match Report
Berkhamsted School 1st XV vs  St Albans School
On: Saturday, 08 Sep 2012
Venue: at Home

Under a scorching sun at Chesham Road fields the 1st XV won a deserved victory over a competitive St. Albans side. There were many positives to take from the game but also much to work on through the week if we are to reach our full potential this season. The forwards' work-ethic and discipline in the scrum, lineout and at the breakdown helped set a platform which eventually created enough chances to win the game. But we were certainly guilty of making hard work of it with some fairly poor decision making and tackling gifting St. Albans eight points early on in the match.

We set ourselves a simple game plan: ball retention, building phases and playing with patience were the central tenets. We appeared to have forgotten these as we turned over possession and spilled some important passes in the first half. Just before half time however we started to hit our straps. After good forward drives by Billington, McAteer and Captain Holt, Henry Bragg went over in the corner. The centre had his best game in a 1st XV shirt, crashing over the gain line with good running lines and defending with determination. Ed Hart and Harry Sambrook both had equally good games in the front row and our dominance in the ruck linked through the impressive Angus Hardy at scrum half provided us with a worthy margin of victory in the end.

Focused training this week will be needed to prepare us for our trip to face Oratory in South London next Saturday.
