Glenalmond 7 v Strathallan 7

SRU S2 scores]

12-12 in real scores.

This was a tight, keenly fought contest between two sides of similar ability. Inevitably with some drizzle, a wet ball and difficult conditions underfoot, many mistakes were made and it was a challenging afternoon for the backs as they did their best to move the ball through several pairs of hands in search of space.

Both sides moved the ball around but there was plenty of hard, direct driving from both XV's and much competition for the ball in the rucks and mauls. Glenalmond got the better of the line-out but couldn't turn enough ball into real, sustained pressure and ventures into the opposition 22 were few and far between despite some good approach work as we progressed beyond the half way line.

An early try for Glenalmond was reward for a pleasing start but Strathallan fought their way into the game with a couple of big, powerful runners and a strong right winger who threatened on a few occasions. Stathallan scored either side of half-time and were ahead 7-4 but in the middle of the second half, Glenalmond moved the ball through a couple of phases and following a quick tap penalty ran in a well executed try to level the scores.

In the end, a draw was a worthy outcome for both sides.

It was pleasing to see so many of the boys chatting afterwards - many know each other from their previous schools and although they fought hard against each other on the pitch, there was much to commend afterwards as old buddies compared notes - as did many of the supporting Parents.

Next match - Saturday v Howe of Fife RFC in Cupar.
