Match Report
Austin Friars 1st VII vs  Austin Friars Sevens Tournament
On: Wednesday, 07 Mar 2018
Venue: at Home

This Wednesday saw the 1st VII taking part in the annual Sevens Tournament at Austin Friars. We started with a match against Nelson Thomlinson. We started off at a high pace as we knew that we needed to score quickly in the 10 minute halves. The early pressure paid off and we won 2 - 0.

After a gap of two games it was time to face Cockermouth. We went ahead in the first half and in the second half passes down the right side between Jessie Brown and Isabel Wood meant that we were able to score two more goals, coming from Claudia Whitaker and Charlotte Brooks and this took the game for us.

Our third match against Dame Allan was tough but our expectations of ourselves was high. This was the best match of the tournament so far; our passes were linking well and we were determined that we were going to come away with a win. We scored in the first few minutes of the first half which took Dame Allan's by surprise. Jemima and Katie's defending must be commended here as well as Jane's sweeping in the middle of the pitch. The final score was 6 - 0 and I am proud to say that this match saw some of the best hockey I have ever seen us play. Our goals were scored by Charlotte Brooks, Jessie Brown and Holly Milbourn.

Unfortunately we were unable to carry that momentum through to the final match of our group. Fatigue set in and Ripon GS beat us 0 - 4. However, not all was lost as this meant we were through to the final for the plate competition.

The plate final was against RGS Newcastle, who, after a good start scored a goal in the first half. As the game went on, we knew we were losing focus but we were too tired to pick ourselves up. At the end of a tense game, the final whistle was blown just after a short corner was awarded to us. We knew this was our final chance but unfortunately the ball went slightly wide of the left post.

Even though we didn't come away with anything this year, it's safe to say that we played some excellent hockey through the day - well done girls!
