On: Thursday, 09 Nov 2017
Venue: Away

St John's 1XV made the 6 hour coach journey up north to face Grammar school at Leeds in the quarter final of the champions cup. The John's defence dominated the first half, giving Leeds absolutely nothing with physical tackles left right and centre. An intercept 80m out, after some superb line speed, saw Ben Tudor run in the first try of the match. John's continued to dominate, and turnover ball in the eagles 22 saw Tom Davison score just a few phases later. Another intercept from Tudor at the end of the first half have John's a 19-0 lead at the break. A lapse in concentration off kick-off gifted Leeds an easy try under the posts in the first play of the second half. John's bounced back and began to hit the rhythm they had in the first half, and a line break followed up by a number of fantastic offloads allowed Jack Potter to score in the corner to make it 24-7. Leeds began to drag themselves back into the game as John's lack of Discipline lead to 2 yellow cards. 2 powerfully finished Leeds tries later and there was a 7 point gap between the teams with 5 minutes left to play. Playing with pride and passion, the John's team held off wave after wave of Leeds attack to record a historic victory and progressed through to the champions trophy semi-final's for the first time.
