Upp, up and away

U15Bs sweep aside old rivals in windy Rutland

In their fifth consecutive away fixture, Oundle's under 15B 'nomads' produced their finest performance to date in chilly conditions, to record an emphatic 7-53 victory at local rivals Uppingham.

Despite transport confusion which saw front row enforcer Toby Schofield stranded at Uppingham's Leicester Road pitches - a full mile from the U15s venue (he would arrive shortly before half time!) - the boys' warm up was focused and they took full advantage of the wind and the slope in the first half.

Playing some of the finest B team rugby one could imagine, with tenacious defence and breakdown work coupled with pace, power and flair in the backs, Oundle raced into a 20-point lead in the first ten minutes. Uppingham rallied slightly but they had few answers to the Oundelians' multi-dimensional game and the half-time score was 0-41.

With the scoreline so strongly in their favour, Oundle took the opportunity to introduce their entire six-man bench at the interval, and try out new combinations around the field. As a result, the second half was slightly more disjointed but it was an important learning experience. Oundle still managed to score two tries while Uppingham managed one consolation. The full time score of 7-53 by no means flattered Oundle and it bodes extremely well for what will be a tough test against another Rutland opponent next week: Oakham.

Oundle's points came from Noah Cooper, Jeff Kitbancha and Alex Kapadia with a brace of tries apiece; Cosmo Fraser, Ben Clayden and Freddie Fulford also crossed the whitewash; and skipper Rohan Scott and his deputy Ben Granville added two conversions each. Mentions in dispatches should also go to hooker Jack Frey, who was tigerish at the breakdown; and Yawasal Naveed in the backs and Ed Day at number eight, both up from the C team, who played as if to the manner born.
