Athletics Triumph

On Thursday 17th May Caterham School competed in the District Athletics meet at the K2 in Crawley. The Inter Girls followed in the footsteps of last year’s victorious team by returning home with the trophy. The girls had to work incredibly hard to win this meet and they showed an incredible amount of team spirit. The majority of the team competed in two events, and as they are so talented, this meant they were faced with two qualifying rounds followed by two Finals – exhausting stuff!

On the track, Robyn Hunt-Williams (100m, 200m), Millie Hopkins (100m, 300m) Georgina Tatton (300m, 800m) and Rebecca Stannard (800m) were all superb. In the field, Millie Hopkins and Caiomhe Flatley came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the triple jump, and Katie Davies, Yana Nesterovitch, Francesca Adams, Hattie Wildman scored some crucial points for the team in the throws. The day finished with a spectacular win for the relay girls – they absolutely dominated the rest of the field and won by a convincing margin.

Not to be outdone, the boys also performed superbly. Callum Thompson came second in both the 200m and 400m. It was great to see National standard 800m runner, Joe Stanley returning to action after a lengthy injury layoff, and Ewan Davidson won the high jump and was superb in the hurdles. But the highlight of the day was Ben Foreman absolutely smashing the school record in the 1500m, setting a new record time of 4.16.86. These fantastic performances meant that the boys finished second, very narrowly missing out on matching the girls’ superb overall victory.
