Berkhamsted hosted their first 7 a side hockey tournament on Saturday 7th January. Visiting schools included Aldenham, UCS, Windsor (2 sides), Bedford Modern and our Old Boys. Berkhamsted were also represented by a 1st team made up of mostly Year 12 and 13 boys and a 2nd team made up of Year 11 and Year 10 boys.
The format of the tournament was two pools of four teams with the top two in each pool then going onto the semi –finals.
Pool A - Berkhamsted 1, UCS, Windsor 2 and Bedford Modern. After a couple of draws and 1-0 wins, Windsor 2 were the eventual winners with Bedford Modern coming 2nd.
Pool B – Berkhamsted 2, Berkhamsted Old Boys, Windsor 1 and Aldenham. The crunch game in this pool saw Windsor 1 narrowly beat the Old Boys 1-0, but both teams progressed through to the semi-finals.
In the first semi Bedford Modern took an early lead v Windsor 1 but conceded a late short corner in the first half which saw it finish 1-1 at half time. This is how the score remained until deep into the 2nd half, when again Bedford conceded a short corner which eventually saw Windsor Boys through into the final, 2-1.
In the other semi-final, the Old Boys were hopefully of victory, but after 5 minutes of attacking found themselves 3-0 down at half time v Windsor 2. The next goal was obviously crucial but it went the wrong way and Windsor 2 ran away with it 5-1 in the end.
So the final saw Windsor v Windsor and in a tense match it went to extra time and golden goal, but the two teams could not be separated. Therefore penalty flicks came into play and Windsor 1 beat Winsor 2, 3-1.
May I take this opportunity to thank all the players and coaches who took part. To Matt Woolcott and the Old Boys, to the Principal Mark Steed for presenting the trophies and finally to the catering staff and caretakers for their support on the day.
